White Pass & Yukon Route No. 114 is a DL-535E type narrow gauge diesel locomotive built by the Bombardier Company in July 1982 for the White Pass & Yukon Route (WP&Y) in Skagway, AK. It is based on the WP&Y's DL-535E type narrow gauge diesels that were custom-built by the Montreal Locomotive Works between 1969 and 1971, but with a wide cab instead of the traditional standard cab at the time.
It was used in occasional tourist excursion service for the WP&Y until eventually being sidelined sometime in the late 2010s. It remained in storage on the WP&Y when the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad (C&TS) announced on November 11, 2023 in a commission meeting that they would acquire the locomotive for $120,000. As of November 2023, it will eventually be moved to its new home at the C&TS between Chama, NM and Antonito, CO sometime in 2024 where it will then continue to operate in occasional tourist excursion service, mainly as a backup locomotive for their operable narrow gauge steam locomotives, and in work train service on the C&TS. On July 16, 2024, it was moved by barge from Skagway, AK to Bellingham, WA and will be moved by truck the rest of the way to Antonito, CO.
Trivia[]
- WP&Y 114 is the fifth former WP&Y narrow gauge diesel to be retired by the railroad and sold off in recent years, the others being WP&Y Nos. 101, 103, 106, and 107, all four of which were acquired by the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNG) in Durango, CO back in April 2020.
