White Pass & Yukon Railroad #72 was one of 4 "70 Class" 2-8-2 "Mikado" type narrow gauge steam locomotives built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1947 for the White Pass & Yukon Route (WP&Y) in Skagway, AK.
Like all the other engines it was designed to work for the WP&Y, which ran from Skagway, AK, to the Yukon Territory in Canada.
No, 72 was retired in 1964 and was used as a stationary boiler at Skagway from 1964 to 1969. In 1969, No. 72 was badly damaged in a roundhouse fire, which resulted in the scrapping of all but its chassis in 1974.
The chassis was sold to Silver Dollar City in 1977 as a source of spare parts. Silver Dollar City eventually sold out to Dollywood in 1986 and all that remained of the chassis was scrapped by 1999.
Trivia[]
