The original "Builder's Photograph" of The Acworth

The Acworth is a class 10-26-D 4-6-0 "Ten Wheeler" type Steam locomotive that was owned by the Western & Atlantic Railroad originally Built in 1881 by the Baldwin locomotive works for the Western & Atlantic Railroad Company as No. 54.

This locomotive was used for both Freight and Passenger service on the Western and Atlantic Railroad.

The locomotive was later went to the Alabama Midland Railway along with sister engines Nos 51, and 52 as their 2, 9, and 7. They began the operation on the railroad in 1887 and ran from Bainbridge, Ga to Sprague, Ala.

The engine, plus the other 2 locomotives were sold to the Atlantic Coast Line and emerged from the Plant System in 1901 and renumbered these three engines 251, 254, and 252.

The engine was scrapped in 1914.

Trivia[]

  • This is one of four large locomotives built for the Western & Atlantic Railroad.
    • The four large locomotives were Greysville, Calhoun, Adairsville, and Acworth. They joined several dozen other locomotives on the Great Kenesaw Route, then headed by Joseph E Brown. Brown had submitted a suspiciously low bid of $25,000 per month in 1871 to win the right to lease run the road for the next 20 years.
  • The AM was incorporated into the Plant System in 1894.
