The Western Railway Museum (also known as the California Railway Museum) is a museum that was originally established in the 1960s and is currently located on Highway 12 between Rio Vista and Suisun in Solano County, California.
History[]
In 1946, a group of San Francisco Bay Area rail fans had formed a preservation society called the Bay Area Electric Railroad Association. The group was specifically interested in electric traction, more than the main line railroads. Other preservation societies such as the California/Nevada Historical Society usually had their meetings and their excursions on main line subjects. The Bay Area Electric Railroad Association had held their monthly social meetings, frequently showing members slides and movies to the group. The Bay Area Electric Railroad Association also had excursions on the many street car lines and Interurbans within the Bay Area.
Then, in the 1960s, the Bay Area Electric Railroad Association had became a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational corporation and formed the California Railway Museum.
