Rheidol (formally named Treze de Maio then Talybont) was a 2-4-0 side tank engine.
History[]
Rheidol was built in 1896 by W, G. Bagnall s builders number 1497 to the gauge of 2 ft 5 1⁄2 in for a Brazilian Sugar Plantation and named Treze de Maio which is Portuguese (national language of Brazil) for Thirteenth of May, the date Brazil had abolished slavery in 1888. The order however was cancelled before export. So Bagnall rebuilt the it to the gauge of 2 ft 3 in and sold it to the Plynlimon and Hafan Tramway and renamed Talybont where it operated from 1897 to 1899 when the railway closed due to financial instability.
And resold to W. G. Bagnall who re-gauged/rebuilt it to 1 ft 11 3⁄4 in gauge and sold it to the Pethick Brothers Contractors in 1900 who were building the Vale of Rheidol Railway (VoR) who acquired the locomotive after the line was finished and numbered it 3 and named it Rheidol. The VoR came under ownership of Cambrian Railways and then under the 1923 grouping act came under the ownership of the Great Western Railway (GWR) in the aforementioned year. The GWR renumbered it 1198 but before Rheidol carried the number it was scrapped in 1924.
