Virginian No. 507 was a class BA 2-8-4 "Berkshire" built by the Lima Locomotive Works.
History[]
The Virginian Railway ordered and took delivery of five "Berkshire" type locomotives from the Lima Locomotive Works in 1946. These locomotives were designated as Class BA and were given road numbers 505 through 509.
This order followed an order for ten Class K-4s "Kanawhas" for the C&O. Due to war time restrictions, the design was frozen so the Virginian's "Berkshires" were made identical to the C&O's. These Class BA Virginian locomotives had 69" diameter drivers, 26" x 34' cylinders, a 245 psi boiler pressure, they exerted 69,350 pounds of tractive effort and each weighed 460,000 pounds.
There are no surviving Virginian 2-8-4 "Berkshire" type locomotives although some Kanawhas managed to survive.
Trivia[]
- The BA Class is known to be a clone of the C&O K4s.
