The Victorian Railways rail tractor was a series of 54 diesel-mechanical locomotives that were constructed by the Victorian Railways themselves at their own Newport Workshops.

History[]

In all, a total of 54 units were ever constructed by the Victorian Railways themselves at their own Newport Workshops. They were designed specifically for moving railway wagons at country stations and/or private sidings, they were meant for very very light duties and only for shunting/switching.

The first unit RT01 was built in 1932 and it entered service on June 11 of that same year, while the remaining 53 were built in the 1950s.

As of today, four units have been preserved, 14 units have been stored, 20 units are still in service, one unit was reclassified as an LT4, while the remaining 15 units were scrapped.
