Built in 1918 as works number 1695, U.S. Army No. 5240 is one of eighty Baldwin Class 10 2-6-2T steam locomotives that were produced by the Davenport Locomotive Works from their Iowa workshop. It along with its siblings were intended to be sent over to the narrow-gauge trench railways in France during the closing years of World War I to deliver supplies during trench warfare.

However, none of the Davenports were sent overseas due to the Armistice being signed on November 11, 1918 which ceased hostilities and led to the end of the war. These locomotives were instead sent to various supply depots and army camps around the United States and put to use on light camp railways.

During the 1940s, most of them had either been sold off as military surplus or were scrapped. Of the eighty built only three of the Davenport 2-6-2's survive today. No. 5240 is the only one them that is in operational condition.

No. 5240 sat in storage for several decades at Schurmanns Iron Horse Ranch in Ridgefield, Washington until Peter Nott of Norgrove Gardens Railway in Arroyo Grande, California purchased the locomotive and relocated it to his property to get it ready to run the rails. After undergoing a three year restoration at the Norgrove Railway Shops, No. 5240 returned to steam in 2021 and continues to operate on the private agricultural tramway known as the Norgrove Gardens Railway which is officially set to open to the public in 2024.
