Not to be confused with the Southern Pacific No. 4449.

UP4449

The Union Pacific No. 4449 was a Class S-5 0-6-0 "Switcher" type steam locomotive built in 1918 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Union Pacific Railroad.

The locomotive spent most of its career as a switcher on the Union Pacific railroad.

This engine was occasionally used to haul small passenger and freight transfer runs when it's needed, as well as switching freight cars and sometimes passenger cars.

It was officially retired from service in 1962 and scrapped shortly after.

Trivia[]

  • As the engine was used to assemble passenger trains, the engines were frequently in public view and the UP considered it made a better public impression to dress them in this way.
  • The locomotive's number is identically similar to that of a Southern Pacific 4-8-4 'Gs-4' class 'Daylight' number 4449.
