The Union Pacific (UP) No. 3983 is a 4-6-6-4 "Challenger" type steam locomotive owned by the Union Pacific Railroad.

History[]

No. 3983 was built in 1943 by the American Locomotive Company of Schenectady, New York.

Like all the other challengers it was used primarily in freight service, but it also was assigned to passenger trains operating through mountain territory to California and Oregon.

It operated its last "revenue" train service in 1957. Then it was retired, and sold for scrap.

  • This locomotive had smoke deflectors.
  • It was painted Two-Tone Grey with Yellow Stripes.
