Union Pacific No. 3967 was a 4-6-6-4 "Challenger" type steam locomotive owned by the Union Pacific Railroad (UP). It was built in 1942 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, New York.
It was used primarily in freight service, but it also was assigned to passenger trains operating through mountain territory to California and Oregon.
On May 17, 1953, it was chosen to run the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club excursion. It operated its last "revenue" train service in 1957 when it the locomotive was retired, and it was stored in the roundhouse; by March 1960, three years later, it was sold for scrap.
Trivia[]
- This locomotive wore smoke deflectors like other Challengers.
- In May 1993, 40 years later another engine 3985 hauled a passenger excursion to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club excursion. The 3985 wore the additional Smoke Deflectors for the excursion.
- It even was renumbered as #3967 on May 15, 1993. Then the next day on May 16, 1993, it was renumbered again - this time to #3718. (No Challengers were ever assigned the number 3718, it was renumbered for a continuation of the 4664-4 Challengers that were converted to oil).
- On May 17, 2003 for the 50th anniversary 3985 hauled the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club excursion and once again wore Smoke Deflectors.
- As of today there's a UP EMD SD70M with the number 3967.
- This was the locomotive that ran the first steam excursion.
