Union Pacific No. 1243 is a class T-57 4-6-0 "Ten Wheeler" type steam locomotive built in 1890 by the Cooke Locomotive & Machine Co. for the Union Pacific railroad as #1477.

It was built for freight service on the Union Pacific railroad, and it operated on various branch lines of the Union Pacific in Nebraska.

In 1915 the locomotive was renumbered and it operated on the railroad's Encampment Branch in Wyoming from the 1930s until 1956 when the 1243 was retired from active service.

In 1990, it was cosmetically restored and moved to Omaha in 1996.

It is now seen on static display at the Durham Western Heritage Museum.

Trivia[]

  • Union Pacific 1243 is one of the oldest "Ten Wheelers" owned by the Union Pacific Railroad.
  • In 1990 the locomotive was use on a couple of special occasions with Union Pacific 3985, as well as double heading a passenger excursion with Union Pacific 844 in 1991 for "Railfair 91" while loaded on a flatcar.
  • It is often named the "Harriman Engine" because, along with sister locomotive 1242 currently displayed in Cheyenne, WY, it is one of two surviving engines owned by the Union Pacific Railroad from the era when E. H. Harriman controlled the Union Pacific.
  • 1243 Made a cameo appearance in "Last Of The Giants".
