The Union Pacific Class S-6 was a class of 0-6-0 switcher type steam locomotives built by the Lima Locomotive Works for the Union Pacific Railroad.

History[]

In the 1920s, the Union Pacific Railroad decided that, what they needed was more shop switchers for switching service in Cheyenne, Wyoming. So the Lima Locomotive Works, who was insisted of the idea, had went back to the drawing board, drew up plans for this new type of steam shop switchers, constructed the steam shop switchers, and delivered the new switcher steam locomotives to the Union Pacific Railroad, which these engines were known as the Union Pacific Class S-6. they were in-fact, the UP Cheyenne Shop's last steam shop switchers built and delivered to the Union Pacific Railroad.

Withdrawal of the Class had occurred the 1960s, but not all of them were scrapped, two examples have survived into preservation. Those said examples were Nos. 4455 and 4466. With 4466 being restored to operating condition and retired again in 1999 and placed on static display at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, California, and 4455 was retired from active service and placed on static display at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado.

Accidents and incidents[]
