The Union Pacific 9000 Class, also known as the UP-1 Class, was a series of 4-12-2 type steam locomotives built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) for the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) between 1926 and 1928. There were 88 locomotives in the class constructed overall. Out of them, only No. 9000 is the sole survivor of the class and the only remaining steam locomotive in the world with the 4-12-2 type wheel arrangement.

Production[]

The first fifteen locomotives were ordered and delivered to the UP in 1926 and were numbered 9000-9014. The second locomotives of fifteen were ordered in 1928 and were numbered 9015-9029.

Accidents and Incidents[]

  • On October 20th, 1948, No. 9018 while operating at upland Kansas, suffered a crown sheet failure which resulted in a catastrophic boiler explosion. The explosion claimed the lives of three people: the locomotive's engineer, the fireman, and brakeman.

Preservation[]

No. 9000 is the only surviving member of its class. It is now on static display at the RailGiants Train Museum in Pomona, CA. As of 2023, with 4-8-4 type No. 844 and Big Boy No. 4014 used in excursion service with the UP's steam excursion program in Cheyenne, WY and Challenger No. 3985 and 2-10-2 type No. 5511 about to undergo restoration back to operating condition by the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America (RRHMA) in Silvis, IL, No. 9000 is, unfortunately, very unlikely to ever run again anytime soon.

In Pop Culture[]

  • No. 9000 appeared in the Kidsongs song "The Locomotion".
  • No. 9000 appeared in the movie "UP Last of the Giants".
