The Ube Electric Railway Class DeKi 11 is a Japanese DC electric locomotive operated by the Ube Electric Railway and later other railway companies from 1937 to 1986.

History[]

The Class DeKi 11 is an early electric locomotive used in Japan. Operated by the Ube Electric Railway, the preceding operator of what is now the East Japan Railway Company's Ube Line, one locomotive was manufactured by Nippon Tetsudō Jidōsha Kōgyō (now Tōyō Kōki) in 1937. It was one of a number of small electric locomotives manufactured by the company.

Originally used by the Ube Electric Railway, the railway was merged with the Ube Railway in 1941. The locomotive was not renumbered when the Ube Railway was acquired by the Japanese National Railways in 1943 and continued operation as DeKi 11 until 1952, when it was reclassified as the Class ED25 and renumbered ED25 1. The locomotive was moved to the Toyamakō Line in 1950, where it operated with the similar RoKo 2 (later ED26 1). The locomotives's Amemiya Seisakusho bogies were replaced with Brill 27MCB-2 bogies in 1951 and its traction motors replaced with Westinghouse WH-558-J6 motors, both sourced from De 203 of the Ina Electric Railway.

ED25 1 was removed from service on the Toyamakō Line in 1961 as new locomotives were introduced; it was transferred to the Ueda Maruko Electric Railway's Maruko Line in 1961. When the line was abolished in April 1969 the locomotive was transferred to the Besshō Line, where it pulled freight trains until 1 November 1984 with the abolition of freight trains on that railway. With few opportunities to pull freight trains the locomotive would be used for switching duties until it was withdrawn in 1986. ED25 1 was donated to Maruko Town shortly thereafter; the locomotive is now on display at Marukokogyohyakunen Memorial Park.

Specifications[]

The Class DeKi 11 used a nose suspension drive system. Westinghouse WH-558-J6 traction motors were used on the locomotives.
