Locomotive Wiki

The Union Pacific Class C-2 was a designation for a group of 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type steam locomotives built as part of the "Harriman Common Standard. These locomotives were widely used for mainline freight, branch line, and heavy switching services across the Union Pacific system.

History[]

The Class C-2 locomotives were workhorse engines, valued for their reliable performance on branch lines and areas with moderate gradients. From 1936 onwards, many in-service C-2s were fitted with superheaters, which slightly increased their weight but improved performance and efficiency. These locomotives had long service lives, with many remaining in use until the mid-1950s when they were eventually replaced by diesel locomotives. Several Class C-2 locomotives have been preserved and are on static display in various communities across the United States, including UP No. 616 in Nampa, Idaho.
