The Toyokawa Railway Class DeKi 52 is a Japanese DC electric locomotive operated by the Toyokawa Railway and later other railway companies from 1927 to 1993.

History[]

The Class DeKi 52 is an early electric locomotive used in Japan. One locomotive was built for the Toyokawa Railway in 1927; the locomotive's mechanical components were manufactured by Nippon Sharyo and its electrical components by Tōyō Denki. This model of locomotive was also ordered by a number of private railways. The locomotive was mainly used on the Iida Line.

With the Toyokawa Railway's nationalization in 1944, the locomotive was acquired by the Japanese National Railways; it initially operated with no change in number, although the locomotive was modified such as having its TDK-522-A traction motors replaced with MT15B traction motors and new PS13 pantographs. It was reclassified as the JNR Class ED29 with vehicle naming regulations coming into force in 1952 and renumbered ED29 1. ED29 1 was withdrawn from JNR service in March 1959 and resold to the Gakunan Railway. ED29 1 was last operated in 1993 but was kept on the company register as a spare locomotive for use during emergencies; due to its lack of use and maintenance parts began to become damaged and there were fatal cracks on the wheels and bogies which made it difficult to use as a spare locomotive. Major repair works were carried out on the locomotive in 2008. The locomotive was officially withdrawn from service on 31 March 2015 and kept on a siding at Gakunan-Fujioka Station; from 21 August 2021, it is exhibited at the Gakutetsu Locomotive Square, located at the same station, along with three other locomotives.

Specifications[]

The Class DeKi 52 used a nose suspension drive system. MT15B traction motors are used on the locomotives.
