The Tokyu 9000 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Tokyu Corporation since March 1986 on the Tokyu Ōimachi Line and formerly on the Tōyoko Line.
History[]
The 9000 series sets were designed to replace the older 3000 and 5000 series sets on the Tokyu network, as well as being a train that could through run to the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line and Toei Mita Line. The sets implemented then-nascent variable frequency drive technology originally tested on 6000 series sets in the 1980s; with the successful test results the 9000 series sets would use this technology. A total of 117 cars were produced, formed into fourteen 10-car sets and one 5-car set; these were used on the Tōyoko and Ōimachi Lines respectively.
With the introduction of the 5050 series sets on the Tōyoko Line, the remaining 9000 series sets on the Tōyoko Line were redeployed for use on the Ōimachi Line staring August 2010. The sets were reformed from eight cars to five cars, with the three cars removed scrapped.
The Seibu Railway will be taking ownership of some 9000 series sets and some Odakyu 8000 series sets from 2024 onwards for use on their branch lines, such as the Kokubunji and Chichibu Lines.
Design[]
The 9000 series cars use a contemporary design featuring a flat front and a gangwayed door. The sets currently feature a multicolored front band on the cab cars to signify their operation on the Ōimachi Line; prior to moving the sets had a red band on their fronts.
Specifications[]
Construction of the cars is of stainless steel. The sets use early-spec Hitachi VF-HR107 or VF-HR112 GTO variable frequency drive traction systems which produce a low-pitched wailing noise which steps up in pitch. 9001 features the older VF-HR107 drives while all other sets use the improved VF-HR112 drive.
