The Tokyu 3020 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Tokyu Corporation since November 2019 on the Tokyu Meguro Line.
History[]
The 3020 series sets were designed to aid with the increasing passenger numbers on the Tokyu Meguro Line to supplement the 3000 and 5080 series cars on the line. Two eight-car sets were built by J-TREC at their Niitsu Works in mid-to-late 2019. Operations began on 22 November 2019; when they were first introduced all rolling stock on the Meguro Line were six cars long and as a result the sets were used in six-car formations. The two intermediate cars that would extend the sets to eight cars were treated as spare cars until 2022, when they were inserted into the sets when eight-car service commenced. A third set, 3123, was built in 2022.
Service commenced on the Tokyu Shin-Yokohama Line in March 2023. 3121 entered service along the Sotetsu network on 26 September 2023, over a half year later of the opening of the Sotetsu-Tokyu Link Line following the installation of required equipment.
Design[]
- Main article: Tokyu 2020 series
The 3020 series cars use a contemporary design featuring a rounded front in the image of a "confused face". The sets were designed to harmonize with the towns and stations alongside the line, with "town development" taken into consideration. The design of the sets was overseen by design firm Tanseisha.
Specifications[]
Construction of the cars is of an aluminum alloy based on J-TREC's sustina concept. The sets are based on the Tokyu 2020 series which are in turn based on the JR East E235 series cars and thus share many mechanicals. The sets use 2-level Mitsubishi pure silicon carbide-based MOSFET variable frequency drive traction systems which produce a hissing noise.
