The Tokyo Metro 2000 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by Tokyo Metro since February 2019.

History[]

Announcements about the 2000 series were first made on 26 March 2018. Fifty-three six-car sets are to be produced for the operator, with revenue service for these sets commencing on 23 February 2019. The first set was produced in August 2018 and was delivered to Tokyo Metro from Nippon Sharyo's Toyokawa plant the same month; it was publicly displayed at Nakano Depot in October 2018.

The sets entered service on 23 February 2019. The initial order of 53 sets was downsized to 52 sets in March 2020, with sets delivered until 2023.

Design[]

The 2000 series sets' design is a departure from many trains of the period, with Tokyo Metro opting for a slightly more retro design with these sets. The design of the 2000 series sets are supposed to evoke the design of the older 500 series sets used when the Marunouchi Line first opened in the 1950s, in addition to giving the 500 series' basic design of the sets some modern touches.

Specifications[]

The sets are made of either stainless steel or aluminum. A notable addition in the trains is the addition of a communal area near one of the doors; the area has a side panel with power sockets and hooks which can be used to charge one's mobile devices or similar peripherals and hang items on. The hooks have a rated load of 5 kilograms (11 pounds). The sets use two-level insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drives with pulse width modulation produced by Mitsubishi; these power permanent magnet synchronous motors which produce a hissing sound.
