The Tokyo Metro 17000 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by Tokyo Metro since February 2021.

History[]

The 17000 series was originally conceived in March 2019 as a future train for the Tokyo Metro Yūrakuchō and Fukutoshin Lines, along with the 18000 series. The trains were officially unveiled on 11 November 2019, intended to replace the aging 7000 series sets and are formed in 8 or 10 car units depending on the line it serves on.

The first sets entered service on 21 February 2021; all sets were in service by 2022. The sets are the recipient of the 2022 Laurel Prize, alongside the Tokyo Metro 18000 series and Keihan 3000 series "Premium Cars".

In addition to the Tokyo Metro Yūrakuchō Line and Fukutoshin Line, the sets are also used for through-running through to and from the Tobu Tōjō Line, Seibu Yūrakuchō Line, Seibu Ikebukuro Line, Tokyu Tōyoko Line and Minatomirai Line.

Design[]

The 17000 series use a rounded design featuring large round headlights to invoke a sense of familiarity as previous trains on said line had used similar large headlight fixtures. The rounded design was chosen to give the sets a gentler appearance. Golden and brown accents are used to denote the lines on which the trains operate: the Yūrakuchō and Fukutoshin lines respectively. The train's interior also features similar brown and golden accents.

Specifications[]

Cars are made of an extruded aluminum alloy using Hitachi's A-Train concept. Cars are 20.47m long. The cars use Mitsubishi silicon carbide-based MOSFETs with permanent magnetic synchronous motors, producing a hissing noise. The trains are fitted with the TIMA system to help monitor onboard equipment.
