The Tokyo Metro 16000 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by Tokyo Metro since November 2010.
History[]
The 16000 series was conceived in 2010 as a train that could replace older trains and have a higher capacity as a whole; at the time, the rolling stock on the line consisted of thirty-nine-year old 6000 series sets, and a new train had to be made to replace them at some point.
Sets were produced from 2010 to 2017 in two sub-variants within five batches. The first sets entered service on 4 November 2010. All thirty seven sets produced are currently in service and are based at Ayase Depot.
Design[]
The 16000 series use a contemporary design for the time with an unpainted body made of an extruded aluminum alloy. The trains' color scheme of green accents on an unpainted aluminum body is meant to bring out an "environmental" design language. The basic design of the trains was overseen by famed designer Ken Okuyama.
Specifications[]
Construction is of an extruded aluminum alloy based on Kawasaki Heavy Industries' efACE (1st, 2nd and 5th batch) and Hitachi's A-Train concept (3rd and 4th batch). End cars are 20.47 meters long, 2.8 meters wide and 4.08 meters high. Sets produced before 2015 use Toshiba two-level insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drives with PWM converters and permanent magnetic synchronous motors, which produce a very unique sound.
Sets produced in 2015 and after use Mitsubishi insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drives with permanent magnetic synchronous motors which produce a hissing sound.
Aside from variable frequency drive differences, both sub-variants have slight differences, including slightly different paint schemes and headlights; pre-2015 sets have green and white accents and high intensity discharge fixtures, while post-2015 sets have green and yellow accents and dual LED headlight fixtures. Sets 16101 to 16105 have a centered detrainment door, while subsequent sets have their detrainment doors offset to the left side of the cab.
