The Tokyo Metro 13000 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by Tokyo Metro since March 2017.

History[]

The 13000 series was conceived in 2014 as a train that could replace older trains and have a higher capacity as a whole; at the time, the rolling stock on the line consisted of twenty-six-year old 03 series sets, and a new train had to be made to replace them at some point.

Sets have been produced since 2016 by Kinki Sharyo. The first sets entered service on 25 March 2017. In addition to being used on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, the sets are also used for through-running through to and from the Tobu Skytree and Isesaki Lines; in fact, the sets were designed to perform through-running through to the Tobu Skytree Line.

All 03 series sets were withdrawn by March 2020.

Design[]

The 13000 series use a fairly modern design for the time with an unpainted body made of an extruded aluminum alloy.

Specifications[]

Construction is of an extruded aluminum alloy. End cars are 20.47 meters long, 2.78 meters wide and 3.585 meters high. The sets use Mitsubishi two-level insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drives; sets 13101 to 13121 use silicon-based IGBT drives which produce a monotonous hissing sound, while sets 13122 onwards use silicon carbide-based MOSFETs which produce a hissing sound.

Trivia[]

  • Tobu 70000 series, a series of electric multiple units that was designed to very similar specifications to the 13000 series sets
