The Tokyo Metro 1000 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by Tokyo Metro since April 2012.

History[]

The 1000 series was a completely new design that was conceived in 2012 as a new train that could replace the aging 01 series sets as the company felt that no refurbishment work could be done to the 01 series sets to potentially extend their lifespans even more. The first set, 1101, was delivered in September 2011, a few months ahead of schedule; it entered service on 11 April 2011.

As the 01 series sets' age began to show, they were slowly replaced by 1000 series sets starting in 2012; the last 01 series set, set 30, was retired from regular service on 10 March 2017, and was replaced with a 1000 series set shortly after. A total of 40 sets were built, for a total of 240 cars, all of which were built by Nippon Sharyo. All sets are in service and are based at Ueno Depot.

Design[]

The 1000 series sets' design is a departure from many trains of the period, with Tokyo Metro opting for a more retro design with these sets. The design of the 1000 series sets are supposed to evoke the design of the 1000 series sets used when the Ginza Line first opened in the 1920s.

The sets have two headlight variations. The first 38 sets, 1101 to 1138, use a dual horizontal overhead headlight fixture, while the last two sets, 1139 and 1140, use a single large headlight fixture; the last two sets were designed as such to resemble the older 1000 series sets even more. The sets, regardless of which headlight configuration they use, use LED headlight fixtures.

Specifications[]

Construction is of an extruded double-skinned aluminum alloy. Cars are 16 meters long, 2.55 meters wide and 3.465 meters high. All sets use Toshiba insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drives with permanent magnetic synchronous motors, which produce a very unique sound.

The sets are finished off in a bright yellow paint scheme with LED headlight fixtures; the interior lighting of the sets is done through multiple ceiling-mounted LED fixtures. The interior of the first 38 sets is most notably rather modern; however, the interior of the final two sets is finished off with a retro feel, with fake wood paneling lining the walls, fake wood detail all around and additional vintage touches such as wall-mounted interior lamps.
