The Tokyo Metro 10000 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by Tokyo Metro since September 2006.

History[]

The 10000 series was conceived in 2004 as a new generation train that would look towards the future as well as being safer and more reliable than previous designs.

The first set, ten-car set 41, was delivered from Hitachi's Kasado Plant some time in 2006 and entered service in September 2006; more sets were later built and put into service progressively. The 10000 series sets were the first trains to be ordered by the then-newly formed Tokyo Metro after the company replaced the Teito Rapid Transit Authority in 2004. The sets are supposed to replace the 7000 series sets; the 10000 series sets have been fulfilling this role ever since their introduction.

In addition to the Tokyo Metro Yūrakuchō Line and Fukutoshin Line, the sets are also used for through-running through to and from the Tobu Tōjō Line, Seibu Yūrakuchō Line, Seibu Ikebukuro Line, Tokyu Tōyoko Line and Minatomirai Line. The sets are based at Wakō Depot when not in uce.

Design[]

Styled by Alexander Neumeister, the 10000 series's design is based on the 05N series sets and uses a "Rebirth/Change" design language.

Sets 41 to 44 have a golden stripe on the front ends of the cab cars; sets 45 and onwards omit this gold line.

Specifications[]

Construction is of an extruded aluminum alloy. End cars are 20.47 meters long, 2.85 meters wide and 4.045 meters high. The sets use Mitsubishi two-level insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drives which produce a hissing sound.

Some sets have had their original three-color LED destination screens for full-color LED screens starting in 2016. The trains use high-intensity discharge headlights.
