The Tokyo Metro 08 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Teito Rapid Transit Authority and its successor Tokyo Metro since January 2003.

History[]

The 08 series was conceived in 2002 as a 21st century-type train that would be put into service on the TRTA Hanzōmon Line; at the time, the rolling stock on the line consisted of twenty-three-year old 8000 series sets, and these sets were made to supplement them as they had yet to be deemed life expired as the latter sets were due to receive life-extension refurbishment. These are currently the most recent trains in Tokyo Metro's "0x series" of trains.

Six sets, designated 51 to 56, were delivered from 2002 to 2003 and entered service on 7 January 2003. When the TRTA was dissolved in 2004, ownership of the six sets was handed over to Tokyo Metro. The sets are used on the Tokyo Metro Hanzōmon Line and can also be used for through-running through to the Tokyu Den-en-Toshi Line and the Tobu Skytree Line.

All sets are currently in service and are based at Saginuma Depot.

Design[]

The 08 series used a fairly modern design with an unpainted body made of extruded aluminum. The sets are based on the 05N series, so some design language carries over.

Specifications[]

Construction is of extruded aluminum. End cars are 20.24 meters long, 2.8 meters wide and 4.092 to 4.14 meters high. All sets use two-level insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drives manufactured by Mitsubishi which produce a hissing sound. The sets were originally equipped with frontal three-color LED destination displays, but have since been replaced with full-color LED displays on all sets.

All six sets have been undergoing a period of light refurbishment since late-2017 or early-2018. Changes include the replacement of the high-intensity discharge headlights to dual LED fixtures and replacement of the interior LED route map displays with full-color LCD displays; no changes have been made to the traction motors.
