The Tokyo Metro 06 series was a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Teito Rapid Transit Authority and its successor Tokyo Metro from March 1993 to January 2015.
History[]
The 06 series was conceived in 1992 as a 21st century-type train that would be put into service on the TRTA Chiyoda Line; at the time, the rolling stock on the line consisted of twenty-two-year old 6000 series sets, and a new train had to be made to replace them at some point.
The lone ten-car set, designated 71, was delivered in December 1992 and entered service on 18 March 1993. When the TRTA was dissolved in 2004, ownership of the set was handed over to Tokyo Metro. The set was used for through-running through to and from the Odakyu Odawara and Tama Lines and JR East's Jōban Line. The set was based at Ayase Depot for its entire service life.
However, the 16000 series sets were manufactured starting from 2009 to replace the rapidly aging 6000 series sets, and just a few years later, Tokyo Metro announced that the rolling stock on the Chiyoda Line would be standardized, with 16000 series being used as the standardized rolling stock on the line. Due to this and the set's incompatibility with the platform screen doors to be installed on the line, the 06 series set was taken out of service in January 2015, towed to Shin-Kiba Depot in August 2015 and scrapped, making this the first of the 0x series sets to be scrapped.
No cars from the set have been preserved.
Design[]
The 06 series used a fairly modern design with an unpainted body made of an extruded aluminum alloy.
Specifications[]
Construction was of an extruded aluminum alloy. End cars were 20.07 meters long, 2.8 meters wide and 4.08 meters high. The set used a three-level insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drive manufactured by Toshiba which produces a loud shrieking sound.
