The Tokyo Metro 05N series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Teito Rapid Transit Authority and its successor Tokyo Metro since February 2000.
History[]
The 05N series was essentially the next batch of sets produced for the TRTA Tōzai Line to supplement the older 05 series sets, in addition to replacing the aging 5000 series sets; at the time, the rolling stock on the line consisted of thirty-five-year old 5000 series sets and fairly recently introduced 05 series sets introduced eleven years prior, and a new train had to be made to replace the former at some point.
Sets were made in six batches from 1999 to 2004 to make up the eighth to thirteenth batches of 05 series sets. When the TRTA was dissolved in 2004, ownership of the sets currently in service at the time was handed over to Tokyo Metro. All sets are currently in service and are based at Fukugawa Depot.
Design[]
The 05N series uses a modern streamlined design with an unpainted body made of an extruded aluminum alloy. The thirteenth batch sets, 05-140 to 05-143, are based on the Hitachi A-Train concept and was jointly developed with the Tōyō Rapid 2000 series sets.
Specifications[]
Construction is of an extruded aluminum alloy while thirteenth batch sets use double-skinned extruded aluminum sections. End cars are 20.27 meters long, 2.8 meters wide and 4.022 to 4.135 meters high. The sets use insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drives provided by a variety of manufacturers powering rotary motors; these manufacturers include two from Hitachi, three from Mitsubishi and an experimental one from Tōyō Denki Seizō. Sets 05-125 to 05-133 use seal-beam halogen headlights while sets 05-134 and onwards use high-intensity discharge headlights; set 05-136 had its headlights swapped for modern LED fixtures, with the older HID lamps removed.
