The Toei 6000 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei) from December 1968 to November 1999 on the Toei Mita Line.

History[]

The 6000 series sets were designed as the first rolling stock for use on the Toei Asakusa Line; these were also designed for through operation to the Tobu Tōjō Line and the Tokyu Meguro Line. Operations began with the opening of the line on 27 December 1968.

Refurbishments began in 1988 to update the sets to modern standards, such as fitting some cars with air conditioning. The sets were replaced with the 6300 series sets beginning in 1993; Toei had wanted to refurbish the sets even further for modern times but prohibitive costs and various other issues, such as through operation with the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line and Saitama Rapid Railway, automatic operation issues and incompatibility with platform screen doors. As a result the 6000 series sets were retired on 28 November 1999 with a number of special events.

After their retirement on the Toei Mita Line, the 6000 series cars were either scrapped or transferred to private railroads; the Chichibu Railway received 14 cars (including 2 parts donors) and the Kumamoto Electric Railway received 10 cars. Most notably however, 72 cars were transferred to Indonesia free-of-charge as official development assistance, pioneering the transfer of old Japanese rolling stock to Indonesia for use. The cars were used from 2000 to 2016 when they were replaced by ex-JR East 205 series cars and retired.

Design[]

The 6000 series cars use a contemporary design featuring a flat front and circular headlight casings.

Specifications[]

Construction of the cars is of stainless steel. The sets use resistor controlled-systems.
