The Toei 5500 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei) since June 2018 on the Toei Asakusa Line.
History[]
The 5500 series was developed for the sole purpose of replacing the older 5300 series sets starting from approximately 2017. The first set, 5501, was delivered in August 2017; it is stated that seven more sets will be delivered in fiscal 2018 with the remaining sets over the coming years.
The first sets entered service on 30 June 2018.
Design[]
The 5500 series uses a modern design with a body made of stainless steel. The sets use unpainted stainless steel bodies with painted cabs. The sets use LED fixtures as headlights.
Specifications[]
Construction is of stainless steel based on J-TREC's Sustina concept; the sets themselves are branded the Sustina S13 Series. Cars are 18 meters long.
The sets use Mitsubishi silicon carbide-based MOSFET variable frequency drives which produce a hissing noise.
