The Toei 5200 series was a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei) from February 1976 to November 2006 on the Toei Asakusa Line.

History[]

The 5200 series sets were designed as rolling stock which could conform to Toei's "Line 1 direct vehicle standard", a set of requirements set forth by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation which dictated a number of requirements and regulations for trains operating on the Asakusa Line (then known as Line 1). Two 6-car sets were manufactured in 1976, both by Alna Kōki; operations began on 28 February 1976. As these featured somewhat major changes from the 5000 series sets these were based on, they were given numbers in the 5200 series but were officially classified as the sixth batch of 5000 series sets.

Refurbishments began in 1988 to fit the sets with air conditioners; work was complete by 1989, making these the first air-conditioned trains on the Asakusa Line. Both sets were reformed into a single 8-car set in 1996, while the remaining surplus cars were scrapped. The sets would mainly be used for through operation through to Keikyu and Keisei lines although use began to diminish by the late 1990s due to vehicle restrictions. With the 14 August 2000 timetable revisions the sole set was officially reclassified as the 5200 series set. Due to aging and the implementation of infrastructure for repairs and inspection at Magome Depot allowing rolling stock operations to be reduced by one, Toei made the decision to retire the 5200 series set in November 2006. The set was retired with a final run on 3 November 2006 and scrapped in January 2007; all cars were scrapped by the next month.

Design[]

The 5200 series cars use a contemporary design featuring a flat front and ovoid headlight casings; their appearance is based on that of the 6000 series sets on the Mita Line as well as the prototype 10-000 series set used on the Shinjuku Line.

Specifications[]

Construction of the cars was of stainless steel. The set used resistor-controlled traction systems.
