The Toei 5000 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei) from December 1960 to July 1995 on the Toei Asakusa Line.

History[]

The 5000 series sets were designed as the first rolling stock for use on the Toei Asakusa Line; these were also designed for through operation to the Keikyu and Keisei Main Lines. Operations began with the opening of the line on 4 December 1960. A derivative known as the 5200 series was also manufactured.

Refurbishments began in 1981 to update the sets to modern standards. The sets were replaced with the 5300 series sets beginning in 1991; by 1995, the last sets, 5097 and 5125, were retired from service on 2 July 1995, with special headboards placed on their gangway doors. With the retirement of the 5000 series sets all trains on the Asakusa Line were air-conditioned.

One car, 5069, has been preserved at the Tokyo Fire Department Fire School in Shibuya; the car is not usually accessible for public viewing.

Design[]

The 5000 series cars use a contemporary design featuring a flat front and circular headlight casings.

Specifications[]

Construction of the cars is of steel. The sets use resistor controlled-systems.
