The Toei 10-000 series (read as 10,000) was a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei) from December 1978 to February 2018 on the Toei Shinjuku Line.
History[]
The 10-000 series sets were designed as the first rolling stock for use on the Toei Shinjuku Line. The first set, 10-010, was manufactured by Nippon Sharyo for test running in 1971 on the Mita Line. Full-production sets would begin production in 1978, with the sets entering service on 21 December 1978 with the opening of the Shinjuku Line, where these would see service; 10-010 would also be refurbished for use on the Shinjuku Line and enter service on the same day.
Building of the sets continued intermittently until 1997, with the last two sets, 10-270 and 10-280, produced by Alna Kōki. Refurbishments began in 2003 to update the sets to modern standards. Scrapping also began the same year with set 10-010 being the first to be retired. The sets were replaced with the 10-300 series sets beginning in 2005; some 36 10-000 series cars were also repurposed for use as new 10-300R series sets, essentially 10-300 series sets with 10-000 series mechanicals. Retirements and scrapping resumed from 2013 and by January 2018 only two sets, 10-270 and 10-280, remained in operation. The last set, 10-280 was retired on 11 February 2018 with a special event; a special headmark was stuck on the front gangway door to commemorate the retirement of the 10-000 series sets, bringing their 39-year service life to a close.
Design[]
The 10-000 series cars use a contemporary design featuring a flat front and dual circular headlight casings. Despite there being a number of cab variations their basic design remains unchanged.
