The Toden 9000 series is a Japanese streetcar type operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei) on the Tokyo Toden network since May 2007.

History

The 8800 series is a series of streetcars manufactured for the Tokyo Toden network; the cars were introduced as an event-specific car for the Tokyo Toden network, a void that needed to be filled with the withdrawal of 6000 series car 6152 in 2001, as well as to further revitalize the Tokyo Toden network in addition to replacing the aging 7500 series cars. Two cars were manufactured by Alna Sharyo; 9001 was manufactured in March 2007, entering service on 27 May 2007, while 9002 was manufactured in December 2008, entering service on 31 January 2009. Although intended as an event-specific car, it is used in a similar pool of services to Toden's other trains.

Design

The 9000 series cars feature a retro-style design; its design takes inspiration from the earliest streetcars to run on what is now the Toden network, what was the Tokyo City Streetcar. 9001 is painted brown while 9002 is painted dark blue.

9001 was manufactured using a grant from the Japan Lottery Association, with its logo splashed on the car's fronts.

Specifications

Construction is of steel. The cars are identical in dimensions to the 8500 series cars; they are the first to use a Tōyō Denki IGBT traction system. The 9000 series cars are equipped with a music box-like warning device or musical horn, officially named as a "melody horn that is gentle on the ears"; all future types of rolling stock on the Tokyo Toden network are equipped with the same warning device.
