The Toden 8900 series is a Japanese streetcar type operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei) on the Tokyo Toden network since September 2015.

History[]

The 8900 series is a series of streetcars manufactured for the Tokyo Toden network; the cars are essentially an improved version of the 8800 series cars introduced in 2009, although they feature a different body design. A total of eight cars were produced from 2015 to 2016, with the first cars entering service on 18 September 2015; sixteen cars were initially ordered but with the planned introduction of the 7700 series cars, itself a modification of the aging 7000 series cars, any further orders were canceled and only eight cars were produced.

Design[]

The 8900 series cars feature a more squared-off design in comparison to the 8800 series. The cars are painted in four colors: Orange, Blue, Rose Pink and Yellow. 8901 and 8902 are painted in Orange, 8903 and 8904 are painted Violet, 8905 and 8906 are painted Rose Pink and 8907 and 8908 are painted Yellow.

Specifications[]

The trains are largely identical to the 8800 series cars in terms of specifications and performance. Similar to the 8800 series, the 8900 series cars are equipped with a music box-like warning device or musical horn, officially named as a "melody horn that is gentle on the ears".
