The Toden 8800 series is a Japanese streetcar type operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei) on the Tokyo Toden network since April 2009.
History[]
The 8800 series is a series of streetcars manufactured for the Tokyo Toden network; the cars were introduced to replace the aging 7500 series cars, in operation since 1962. A public poll was held in January 2008 to determine the design of the cars, with the first cars manufactured in 2009. A total of ten cars would be manufactured by Alna Sharyo, numbered 8801 to 8810, with the first two cars entering service on 26 April 2009; until 31 May 2009, the two cars would run on green power generated by biomass from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bureau of Sewerage. An unveiling event for the series was conducted on 25 December 2010 with the delivery of 8810.
Design[]
The 8800 series cars feature a rounded design to "express kindness and friendliness", with the design aiming to "open up the future of the Arakawa Line with advanced technology and comfort". The cars are painted in four colors: Rose Red, Violet, Orange and Yellow. 8801 to 8805 are painted in Rose Red, 8806 and 8807 are painted Violet, 8808 and 8809 are painted Orange and 8810 is painted Yellow.
Specifications[]
- Main article: Toden 9000 series
The trains are virtually identical to the 9000 series cars in terms of specifications. Similar to the 9000 series, the 8800 series cars are equipped with a music box-like warning device or musical horn, officially named as a "melody horn that is gentle on the ears".
