The Toden 6500 series was a Japanese streetcar type operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei) on the Tokyo Toden network from 1954 to December 1967.

History[]

The 6500 series was a type of streetcar that operated on the Tokyo Toden network. One car was manufactured in 1954, initially as 6000 series car 6291; however, due to its significant differences in appearance, mechanical and electrical equipment it was classified as a new series. Originally planned to be used as a trailer car in a master-slave formation with other streetcars, use of 6501 in this way was discontinued due to various reasons, with 6501 then used singly.

Due to its highly specialized mechanical and electrical equipment, 6501 was typically stored at Mita Depot along with the 5500 series cars and was rarely used on other routes apart from Toden Route 1; 6501 was only known to have operated on Routes 2 and 37 in addition to Route 1. 6501 was withdrawn on 10 December 1967 with the abolishment of Route 1 and subsequently scrapped.

Design[]

In comparison to the 6000 series cars, 6501 used a curvier body similar to the 5500 series cars.

Specifications[]

Construction was of steel. 6501 used a Nippon Sharyo-manufactured resistor controlled traction system and nose suspension driveshaft; 6501 was originally intended to use a different traction system manufactured by Mitsubishi but this system was used for the construction of 5500 series car 5502.
