The Toden 4000 series was a Japanese streetcar type operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei) on the Tokyo Toden network from 1925 to March 1970.
History[]
The 4000 series was a series of streetcars manufactured for the Tokyo Toden network; the cars were introduced in 1925 as the first three-doored cars since the 1653 series cars. Divided into the 4000, 4100 and 4200 series, all three classes being largely identical apart from a number of minor manufacturing differences, a total of 183 cars of all types were manufactured.
Many cars were destroyed during World War II. From 1949 to 1952, 117 cars were rebuilt to have steel bodies at Shibaura Works; other cars were rebuilt into other classes of streetcar, such as the 3000 series cars. A number of Ōji Electric Tram Company 120 series cars were also converted into 4000 series cars. In their final years the 4000 series cars operated out of Ōkubo Depot on Route 13, with all being withdrawn on 27 March 1970 with the abolishment of Route 13.
Some cars following their withdrawal were transferred to the Kagoshima City Tram, becoming their 400 series cars between 1950 and 1953. Due to a housing shortage, thirteen cars were used as temporary lodging for metropolitan teachers in the Edogawa precinct in Tokyo in 1959.
No 4000 series cars have been preserved.
Design[]
The 4000 series cars were originally manufactured of wood. When rebuilt with steel bodies, they had a body style similar to that of the 6000 series cars manufactured around the same time. They are painted in the same livery of yellow with red accents.
Specifications[]
Construction was of steel. Electrical systems for the streetcars were manufactured by Shibaura Seisakushō.
