The Tokyo City Streetcar 3000 series was a Japanese streetcar type operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei) on the Tokyo Toden network (now Tokyo Toden) from June 1949 to November 1972.
History[]
The 3000 series was a series of streetcars manufactured for the Tokyo Toden network; the term is used to refer to what would become a total of 242 cars, numbered between 3001 and 3242, manufactured in two batches. The first batch of cars consisted of 213 cars converted from largely wooden-bodied 3000 series cars, although 150, 160 and 170 series cars acquired from the Ōji Electric Tram Company and Tokyo City Streetcar 1400 series cars were also used as part of the conversion. The second batch of cars consisted of newly-manufactured cars in addition to some converted cars, totaling 29 cars. It is not known what the numbers of the converted 3000 series are pre-conversion.
As with the previous wooden-bodied 3000 series cars, the 3000 series cars became the face of the Tokyo Toden network due to their sheer volumes. The abolition of a significant number of lines on the Toden network starting in the mid-1960s resulted in the withdrawals of many of Toden's streetcar types, with withdrawals of this class commencing in 1967; all cars were withdrawn by 15 November 1972. Five cars were transferred to the Nagasaki Electric Railway, where they served until 1982 when a flood rendered them unusable. No 3000 series cars have been preserved.
Design[]
The 3000 series cars had a body style similar to that of the 6000 series cars manufactured around the same time. They are painted in the same livery of yellow with red accents.
Specifications[]
Construction was of steel. Electrical systems for the streetcars were manufactured by Mitsubishi.
