The Toden 2000 series was a Japanese streetcar type operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei) on the Tokyo Toden network from 1951 to October 1969.
History[]
The 2000 series was a series of streetcars manufactured for the Tokyo Toden network; the term is used to refer to what would become a total of 24 cars, numbered between 2001 and 2024. Most cars were manufactured from new, entering service starting 1951, while two cars, 2011 and 2012, were rebuilt from wooden-bodied 2000 series cars originally built in 1943. The cars, like the older 2000 series, were exclusively used on the Suginami Line (Route 14), a narrow gauge line on former Seibu Railway trackage, from Shinjuku to Ogikubo; when that line was abolished on 1 December 1963, all cars were converted from cape gauge (3 ft 6 in) to Scotch gauge (4 ft 6 in) but largely remained out of use until September 1965, when they were redeployed to Mita, Meguro, Hiroo and Waseda Depots.
The abolition of a significant number of lines on the Toden network starting in the mid-1960s resulted in the withdrawals of many of Toden's tram types, with withdrawals of this class commencing in 1967; all were withdrawn on 26 October 1969 with the closure of Hiroo Depot and the abolishment of Routes 7, 33 and 34. Prior to the class' withdrawal, cars 2018 to 2024 were transferred to the Nagasaki Electric Tramway, where they served until 2019. No 2000 series cars have been preserved.
Design[]
The 3000 series cars had a body style similar to that of the 6000 series cars manufactured around the same time. They are painted in the same livery of yellow with red accents.
Specifications[]
Construction was of steel. Electrical systems for the streetcars were manufactured by Mitsubishi and Shibaura Seisakushō.
