The Toden 1200 series was a Japanese streetcar type operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei) on the Tokyo Toden network from 1936 to 1967.
History[]
The 1200 series was a series of streetcars manufactured for the Tokyo Toden network; the cars were essentially a full-production version of the experimental 1300 series cars, itself a derivative of the 1000 series cars with an extended body. The cars used newly-manufactured car bodies by Nippon Sharyo and Teikoku Sharyō but used equipment from scrapped rolling stock. A total of 109 cars were produced.
Many members of the class were destroyed during World War II, with most restored and all members of the class renumbered accordingly. Some cars were rebuilt with further extended bodies in 1961, resulting in the 1500 series. The abolition of a significant number of lines on the Toden network starting in the mid-1960s resulted in the withdrawals of many of Toden's streetcar types, with withdrawals commencing in 1964; all cars were withdrawn by 1967 with the closure of Hiroo Depot.
No 1200 series cars have been preserved.
Design[]
The 1200 series cars featured a body style following that of the 1000 series cars, but featured a more rounded roof profile and raised roof gutters.
Specifications[]
Construction was of steel. Electrical systems for the streetcars were manufactured by Mitsubishi.
