Subaru Corporation, formerly known as Fuji Heavy Industries until 2017, is a Japanese multi-national conglomerate involved in terrestrial, aerospace defense and automotive manufacture. In the past, Subaru was also an established rolling stock manufacturer; the rolling stock division is a predecessor company of Niigata Transys.

The history of the company can be traced back to 1917 with the Nakajima Aircraft Company, which was broken up after World War II under Japanese keiretsu legislation and renamed Fuji Sangyō, named for Mt. Fuji, one of Chikuhei Nakajima's (founder of the Nakajima Aircraft Company) favorite mountains. Fuji Heavy Industries was founded in June 1953 after the San Francisco Peace Treaty came into effect, with Fuji Kōgyō, Fuji Jidōsha Kōgyō, Ōmiya Fuji Kogyō, Utsunomiya Sharyō, and Tokyo Fuji Sangyō merging to become Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., to become one of Japan's largest manufacturers of transportation equipment.

In the 1980s, Fuji Heavy Industries established itself as one of Japan's prime transportation vehicle manufacturers, manufacturing automobiles and military and railroad equipment; however, 80% of the company's sales came from its automobiles. The company was still going strong in the 1990s, but by 2002 company management decided that it would not be worth it to continue the business due to decreasing sales. With this decision, Fuji Heavy Industries exited the rolling stock business in 2002, with operations taken over by Niigata Transys.
