The Spokane, Portland & Seattle Class E-1 were a series of 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotives that operate on the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railroad.
History[]
These engines were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1938, originally designated as 'A-3's for the Northern Pacific Railway and were numered 700-702. The E-1 class "Northerns" were very similar to the A-2 through the A-5 class "Northerns" on the Northern Pacific Railroad built by Baldwin from 1934–1943. Visually, the locos are near-identical. The only difference is that the Northern Pacific Railroad 4-8-4s burn coal and the 4-8-4s on the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railroad burn oil (and have a longer, wider range as a result).
But still the 'E-1's continued to provide passenger service hauling secondary trains though at one point in 1947 when a catastrophic wreck occurred on 700 in Washington.
By the late 1950s 2 but one of these engines were scrapped as diesels replace steam.
Today only one member exists Spokane, Portland & Seattle No. 700 is now own by the City of Portland, Oregon at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center.
