History[]
The Southern Railway recieved 25 USRA light mikados in 1918 for them and their Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific subsidiary and numbered tham 4750 - 4764 and 6285 - 6294 (CNO&TP). In 1922, the Southern purchased 35 more light mikados and numbered them 6295 - 6319 (CNO&TP) and 6612 - 6621 (AGS). Later in 1923, the last ten engines were purchased straight from ALCo.
These locomotives, alongside the Ms and their bigger cousins, the Ms-4s, were part of the backbone of the Southern Railway System. They could handle freight and passenger trains with ease. Later on in the 1930s and 1940s, they were equipped with feedwater heaters.
These engines could be found on the Columbia to Savannah, Charlotte to Spartanburg, Atlanta - Birmingham, Chattanooga - Memphis, and at times on the Charleston to Hamburg divisions. However, because of their weight, they weren't allowed to go onto the New Orleans & Northeastern subsidiary, thus leaving their Ms-3 class co-workers to run that bit of the Southern.
The first Ms-1 to retire was #4761. A huge majority of the class was written off the roster in 1952 and by August 1953, the last engines #4760, 6296, 6299, 6313, and 6315, were written off of the Southern Railway's equipment roster. Sadly, none of the class were preserved.
