History[]
Southern Pacific No. 8278 was manufactured in 1980 by the Electro-Motive Division and it arrived on the Southern Pacific Railroad that same year in 1980.
On May 12th, 1989, Southern Pacific No. 8278 was borrowed out of Mojave Yard to become the new leader of Southern Pacific MJLBPI-11 (extra 7551-east) when it along with SD45Rs #7551 and #7549 as well as SD45T-2 #9340 were destroyed in the 1989 Cajon Pass Runaway when they crashed along Duffy Street. No. 8278, along with #7551 and #7549 and #9340 were all damaged beyond repair and scrapped.
Trivia[]
- In the Mayday episode "Runaway Train", No. 8278 was portrayed by Barrie Collingwood Railway GP9 No. 1001. During filming, No. 1001 was temporarily repainted into the "Kodachrome" livery of the failed SPSF merger, just like No. 7551, one of the other locomotives involved in the wreck, although the real 8278 has the normal SP paint scheme. After filming ended, No. 1001 was repainted back to its original livery.
