Southern Pacific No. 7546 was an SD45R diesel locomotive built by the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) for the Southern Pacific Railroad in January 1970.

History[]

Southern Pacific No. 7546 was built in January 1970 and entered service on the Southern Pacific Railroad the same year in 1970.

When it was first built, it was first built as SD45 #9134 and given the classification of EF636-6, but due to the massive 20-cylinder engines causing them to have a very bad fuel mileage and coupled with the crankshaft failures, it was rebuilt into an EMD SD45R and renumbered from 9134 to 7546 in May 1985, it would be reclassified as EF636LR-3.

It had lasted into the days of Union Pacific when Southern Pacific and its parent company Rio Grande Industries had merged into Union Pacific.

It would be retired from service on the Union Pacific and was offered to Montana Rail Link (MRL) where it was renumbered by Montana Rail Link as #320.
