Southern Pacific No. 7503 was an EMD SD45R diesel locomotive built by the Electro-Motive Division for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1967.

History[]

Southern Pacific No. 7503 was built in 1967 and entered service on the Southern Pacific Railroad the same year in 1967.

When it was first built, it was first built as SD45 #8917 and given the classification of EF636-2, but due to the massive 20-cylinder engines causing them to have a very bad fuel mileage and coupled with the crankshaft failures, it was rebuilt into an EMD SD45R and renumbered from 8917 to 7503 in 1984, it would be reclassified by the Southern Pacific as EF636LR-1.

It had lasted into the days of Union Pacific when Southern Pacific and its parent company Rio Grande Industries had merged into Union Pacific. It would be retired from service on the Union Pacific in 1999 and was eventually rebuilt into a CEFX SD40M-2 and renumbered by CEFX #3134. In 2014, the Maryland Midland Railroad (Parent company Genesee & Wyoming) purchased 3134 from CEFX and was renumbered 3449. Sometime in mid-2014, it was repainted into corporate colors.
