Southern Pacific No. 7502 was an SD45R diesel locomotive built by the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) for the Southern Pacific Railroad in April 1968.

History[]

Southern Pacific No. 7502 was built in April 1968 and entered service on the Southern Pacific Railroad the same year in 1968.

When it was first built, it was first built as SD45 #8957 and given the classification of EF636-3, but due to the massive 20-cylinder engines causing them to have a very bad fuel mileage and coupled with the crankshaft failures, it was rebuilt into an EMD SD45R and renumbered from 8957 to 7502 in 1984, it would be reclassified by the Southern Pacific as EF636LR-1.

On February 20, 1989, #7502 was involved in a wreck when a 58-car freight train derailed in the Heart of Manteca in Manteca, California.

It had lasted into the days of Union Pacific when Southern Pacific and its parent company Rio Grande Industries had merged into Union Pacific. It would be retired from service on the Union Pacific in December 1999 and its current whereabouts are currently known.
