Southern Pacific No. 6051 is an EMD E9 Diesel locomotive that was built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1954.

History[]

Construction and Delivery[]

Southern Pacific No. 6051 was constructed in 1954 by General Motors Electro-Motive Division and it was delivered to the Southern Pacific Railroad that same year in 1954, No. 6051 was one of nine EMD E9 locomotives ordered by the Southern Pacific.

Paint Schemes[]

When No. 6051 was delivered to the Southern Pacific Railroad, it was delivered in the Southern Pacific's "Daylight" paint scheme. However, in May 1958, No. 6051 was painted in the experimental black with orange nose, or "Halloween" paint scheme.

Retirement and Donation[]

No. 6051 was retired in from active service on the Southern Pacific on December 24, 1969, and it was eventually donated to the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society at the end of the year along with Baldwin DRS-6-6-1500 No. 5208 and EMD F7A No. 6402. And these actions were largely done by the actions of Southern Pacific's Vice President Larry Hoyt.

Preservation[]

All three units were moved to the California State Railroad Museum (CSRM) in Sacramento, California on June 22, 1978, where it was placed on static display near Sacramento Valley Station or stored at SP's Sacramento General Shops until the California State Railroad Museum (CSRM) was constructed. No. 6051 was restored in the early 1980s and is in its original 1955 appearance in the Southern Pacific's "Daylight" paint scheme. No. 6051 was also part of the 1981 "Railfair" festivities to celebrate the opening of the California State Railroad Museum (CSRM).

As of today, Southern Pacific No. 6051 is currently in operational condition and under current ownership of the California State Railroad Museum.
