Southern Pacific No. 565 was a 0-6-0T tank engine that was built in 1903 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Southern Pacific Railroad. It originally started out life as Southern Pacific No. 1109, a 0-6-0 steam locomotive with a tender, but in 1939 it was converted into a streamlined 0-6-0T for use in the Los Angeles General Shops area.
No. 565 served as a 'shop switcher' for the Southern Pacific as one of many specialized steam switchers used for moving other locomotives around engine terminals and backshops. They were usually comprised of old converted retired locomotives whose original usefulness had come to an end but were not quite ready for the cutters torch. No. 565 worked until 1956 when it was retired from service and was scrapped.
